[all variants] Why is MOVE now Default Instead of COPY to Other Drive in Nautilus/Places?

OK, I’m pretty sure this never used to happen before, but do correct me if I am wrong. I’m fairly certain that up until recently, if I dragged a file/folder to another drive or partition in the side pane (ie Places) in Nautilus, it would just copy it, not move it. This is, after all, the default behaviour in any OS I’ve encountered, from my days in Windows to the last 3 years with Ubuntu.

However, the other week I noticed that when I dragged some files to a portable drive connected via USB (ie onto its link in the left hand Places pane in Nautilus), it actually moved them, so I had to copy them back to their original location. I just connected another drive via eSATA connection and it did the same, so am wondering what has happened to the default order of things.

If I drag the files to an open window of the destination drive, then they are copied over, as one would expect; if I drag them to their links in Places, they are moved. Is anyone else experiencing this? Is this a bug, or has some default option been changed? Can I revert things to they way they were? I am using Jaunty 9.04 with all latest updates. Cheers.
